In his essay, The Wayne County Fort Hill Enclosure History, Condition and Proposal for the Preservation of an Important Archeological Site, Dr. Michel of Ohio State University outlines several steps to preserving the Fort Hill site and converting it into a community educational center. His hope is that the public will be able to visit the site to learn more about Wayne County’s indigenous history and appreciate the beauty of the enclosure. The first step of the preservation process is for Dr. Michel to contact the property’s owner to potentially buy it. This would also involve contacting local historical organizations such as the Wayne County Historical Society and the Ohio History Connection to access their support and fundraising abilities. After the property has been bought, Dr. Michel hopes to raise enough money for landscaping, educational plaques, and a parking area for visitors. He also wants to invite the College of Wooster’s archeological department to conduct further excavations to learn more about the site and its purposes to ancient indigenous cultures. If human remains are found, relevant indigenous groups would be brought in to properly handle the remains according to their religious needs. 1Michel, 9.
